DG Approved Doctor in West Delhi: Seafarer Medical in Rajouri Garden & Raghubir Nagar (2026)

If you live in West Delhi and you are a seafarer, you already know the problem. Your CDC, your INDoS number and your joining date are all in order — and then the medical sends you across the city. Okhla. Hauz Khas. Dwarka. A morning gone, a fasting sample delayed, and a second trip if one test needs repeating.

That is not an accident of bad luck. It is what the official register actually looks like. And in 2026 it changed for West Delhi.

Short answer: A DG approved doctor in West Delhi is available at Edge Marine Medicals, Raghubir Nagar — Tagore Garden Extension, next to Rajouri Garden. Seafarer examinations are conducted and signed by Dr. Nishant Thapar, MBBS, MD (Radiodiagnosis), DG Shipping approved medical examiner, Approval No. DEL/WES/0005/2026. The complete PEME — physical, vision and colour vision, audiometry, chest X-ray, ECG, pathology and dental — is done in one building, in one visit, with the certificate issued the same day in the ordinary course. You can and should verify the approval yourself on the DG Shipping eSamudra portal before you book.

Why West Delhi Seafarers Have Always Had to Travel

This is worth setting out with the actual numbers, because it explains a frustration that West Delhi seafarers have lived with for years and usually assumed was just how things are.

The Directorate General of Maritime Administration maintains the official Register of Approved Medical Examiners of Seafarers under the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000. On the register dated 11 September 2026, Delhi has 31 approved medical examiners.

Here is where they are:

Twenty-nine of the thirty-one sit in the southern half of the city. For a seafarer in Uttam Nagar, Nangloi or Punjabi Bagh, that is an hour and a half each way in Delhi traffic, on a morning when he has been fasting since the night before. It is the single most common reason a West Delhi seafarer ends up spending two days on something that should take one.

Edge Imaging & Diagnostics is the one entry on that register with a West Delhi address. We are not claiming that makes us better doctors than anyone in Hauz Khas. What it means is narrower and more practical: if you live west of the Ring Road, you no longer have to cross the city to be examined by an approved examiner.

What “DG Approved” Means — and Why the Address Is the Second Question

Convenience only matters after the approval is real, so take these in the right order.

The Directorate General of Shipping recognises individual medical practitioners to conduct seafarer medical examinations and sign the certificate. The approval attaches to the doctor, not to the building or the signboard. A centre becomes a meaningful “DG approved centre” when an approved examiner practises there and the centre can complete the full examination.

That is why the first question to ask any centre — including this one — is not “are you approved?” but “which approved examiner will sign my certificate, and what is the approval reference?” A genuine centre answers that in writing within minutes. Then you check it yourself.

How to check, in two minutes

  1. Open esamudra.dgshipping.gov.in. Type the address yourself rather than following a link forwarded on WhatsApp — look-alike domains exist for most government portals.
  2. Open the Registered Medical Practitioners section and choose View Directory. No account is needed.
  3. Search the examiner’s name, or filter by city.
  4. Match the approval reference against what the centre told you, and later against the number printed on your certificate.

Ours is DEL/WES/0005/2026, in the name of Dr. Nishant Thapar. Our step-by-step guide on verifying a DG Shipping approved doctor on the eSamudra portal walks through the whole check with the details to match, and a companion guide sets out what a properly equipped DG Shipping approved medical centre in Delhi must have on site.

A certificate signed by a doctor who is not on the register is not merely weaker. It can be treated as invalid — which means a failed sign-on, a lost joining date, and the whole examination repeated at your own cost. Two minutes now is cheap insurance.

Where We Are, and How to Reach Us

Edge Marine Medicals operates from the Edge Imaging & Diagnostics centre at B-568-569, Raghubir Nagar, Tagore Garden Extension, New Delhi 110027 — immediately adjacent to Rajouri Garden, and within the ring of West Delhi localities most seafarers here live in.

By Metro

  • Blue Line — Tagore Garden is the nearest station, a short auto or e-rickshaw ride away. Subhash Nagar and Rajouri Garden are the next closest.
  • Pink Line — change at Rajouri Garden, which is the Blue–Pink interchange, then one stop on the Blue Line.
  • Green Line — from Peeragarhi, Paschim Vihar, Madipur or Punjabi Bagh, change at Kirti Nagar or come down to Rajouri Garden.

If you are coming from Bahadurgarh or Nangloi, the Green Line runs straight in — which is why we see a steady flow of Haryana-based seafarers who previously travelled to South Delhi.

By road

We are just off the Ring Road corridor through Rajouri Garden, reachable from Najafgarh Road, Pankha Road and the Punjabi Bagh flyover without entering central Delhi. Seafarers driving in from Gurugram via Dhaula Kuan, or from Rohtak Road, avoid the worst of the city entirely.

If you are travelling into Delhi for the medical

  • Delhi Cantt and New Delhi railway stations — both a straightforward ride; Delhi Cantt in particular is close.
  • IGI Airport — via Dhaula Kuan, or Airport Express to New Delhi and across on the Blue Line.
  • Kashmere Gate ISBT — Red Line to Inderlok, then Green Line, or a direct cab.
  • Anand Vihar ISBT — Blue Line straight across the city to Tagore Garden.

Tell us when you book that you are travelling in. We will sequence the fasting samples, the imaging and the examiner’s assessment so you are not sitting between appointments, and so a same-evening return journey stays possible. Exact directions and timings are on our contact page, and the centre’s own page is at Raghubir Nagar, Tagore Garden.

Localities and Areas We Serve

Seafarers and their families come to us from across the western half of the city and well beyond it:

  • Immediate belt — Rajouri Garden, Tagore Garden, Raghubir Nagar, Subhash Nagar, Ramesh Nagar, Moti Nagar, Kirti Nagar
  • Wider West Delhi — Paschim Vihar, Punjabi Bagh, Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Uttam Nagar, Tilak Nagar, Hari Nagar, Nangloi, Peeragarhi, Madipur, Shivaji Enclave, Nihal Vihar, Mundka, Mayapuri, Naraina
  • Delhi NCR — Gurugram, Bahadurgarh, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad
  • Beyond NCR — Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Bihar, for seafarers who travel in for a single-day examination

We also run centres at Paschim Vihar and Moti Nagar, which share the same radiology team and reporting standards — though the seafarer medical itself is conducted where the approved examiner sits.

The Complete PEME, Under One Roof

The reason a West Delhi address matters is not only the commute. It is that everything happens in one building, so a finding that needs a second look does not become a second week.

TestWhat it coversWhy it is required
General physical examinationHeight, weight, BMI, blood pressure, pulse, systemic clinical examinationEstablishes the baseline fitness record future medicals are compared against

Indicative panel. The exact list varies with rank, age and your shipping company’s requirements — tell us both when you book and we will confirm your own panel in writing.

Two things are worth saying plainly about capability. Edge Imaging & Diagnostics is an NABH-accredited diagnostic facility, and the marine medical runs inside the same quality framework that governs our radiology and pathology work for every other patient. And because the group is built around advanced imaging — ultrasound, CT and MRI on site — an incidental finding on your chest X-ray can be looked at properly the same day instead of sending you across the city for a second appointment.

How the Day Actually Runs

Most seafarers want one answer: can I finish and leave? Here is the sequence when everything is in one building.

  • Registration and document check. Passport, CDC, INDoS number, previous certificate and any specialist reports. Spellings are confirmed against your passport before anything is printed — one letter of difference is a genuine reason for rejection at sign-on.
  • Fasting samples first. Blood and urine are collected early so the laboratory has the full morning.
  • Imaging and cardiac. Chest X-ray and ECG, which take minutes each when there is no travel between them.
  • Vision, colour vision and audiometry. Conducted properly, in the right conditions — a hearing test in a noisy corridor is not a hearing test.
  • Dental assessment.
  • Clinical examination by the approved examiner, with your history, reports and current medications in front of him.
  • Certificate issued once results are in — same day in the ordinary course — and uploaded to the portal.

What extends the day is almost never paperwork. It is a finding that needs a repeat test or a specialist opinion: a blood pressure that needs re-checking after rest, a sugar reading that needs confirming, an X-ray appearance that deserves a closer look. Those are precisely the situations where being inside a full imaging centre saves you days.

What to Bring, and How to Prepare

Documents

  • Original Indian passport
  • Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC)
  • INDoS number — a printout is easiest
  • Your previous medical certificate, if you have held one
  • Company requisition letter, where your employer has issued one
  • Any specialist reports, surgical summaries or LASIK records
  • A written list of medications you currently take
  • Recent passport-sized photographs in formal attire

The night before

  • Confirm the fasting window when you book rather than assuming it — it varies with the panel your company requires. Plain water is normally allowed and helps with both the blood draw and the urine sample.
  • Sleep properly. Blood pressure and ECG both read worse after a night on a train, and an avoidable borderline reading creates avoidable delay.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours. It affects liver parameters and blood pressure.
  • Bring your spectacles or lenses and the prescription. Vision is assessed with the correction you actually use.
  • Deal with known dental problems in advance — dental fitness is one of the most common avoidable hold-ups.
  • Declare your medical history honestly. A declared, well-controlled condition is routinely manageable. An undeclared one found later is a far larger problem, at sea and on paper.

If you are worried about a specific test, two guides go deeper than this one: DG Shipping eyesight and vision requirements, which sets out the acuity standards by department, and why seafarers are declared unfit and how to pass. If your concern is specifically blood pressure or blood sugar, we set out the actual BP and diabetes limits — 150/90 for new candidates, 160/100 under 50 and 175/100 over 50 — and how each is assessed.

What It Costs, and What Should Be in the Quote

We do not publish a single figure for the seafarer medical, and we would be cautious of anyone who does. The panel genuinely differs by rank, by age and by shipping company — some principals add tests of their own, some flag States have specific requirements — so a headline price usually means either a short examination or a quote that grows at the counter.

What you should insist on, from any centre, is the inclusions in writing before you travel:

  • Which tests are covered by the quoted fee, named individually
  • What is billed separately, if anything
  • What a repeat test costs if a reading is borderline, and how long it adds
  • Whether the certificate is issued on your company’s own proforma
  • An itemised receipt

Our transparent breakdown of what belongs in a complete quote is in the DG Shipping medical cost in Delhi guide. Send us your rank and your company on WhatsApp and we will confirm your exact panel and inclusions in writing, before you leave home.

Validity, Renewal and the 22-Month Habit

ItemUsual maximum validity
Medical fitness certificate — seafarer aged 18 and above2 years
Medical fitness certificate — seafarer under 181 year
Colour vision assessment6 years
Certificate issued with a shorter validity on medical groundsAs stated on the certificate
Validity can be shortened by the examining doctor on medical grounds, and rules are revised from time to time — always read the expiry date printed on your own certificate.

One habit saves more joining dates than anything else in this article: diarise your renewal at the 22-month mark, not at 24. If a test needs repeating or a finding needs a specialist opinion, you want weeks of room, not days. Our guide to checking your certificate validity and expiry explains how to confirm yours before a contract rather than during one.

Five Things Worth Checking, Wherever You Book

None of these proves anything on its own. Together they separate centres faster than any review page — and every one of them is something you can check rather than argue about.

  1. The examiner’s name, offered without hesitation. You are entitled to know before booking who will examine you and sign your certificate.
  2. An approval reference you can look up. If the answer is “the list is not updated, ignore it”, that is itself an answer.
  3. The whole panel in one building. If X-ray, audiometry or pathology is sent out, ask where, and how many hours that adds.
  4. A straight answer on cost. Inclusions in writing, and what a repeat test costs.
  5. No promise of the outcome. No honest examiner can guarantee a “fit” result before examining you. A guaranteed pass is not a service — it is a risk transferred onto you, and it is your sign-on that carries it.

Why West Delhi Seafarers Choose Edge Marine Medicals

  • An approved examiner you can verify. Dr. Nishant Thapar, MBBS, MD (Radiodiagnosis), Approval No. DEL/WES/0005/2026 — checkable by you, your agent or your employer on the government portal.
  • The only West Delhi address on the register as at the 11 September 2026 list — which for you means no cross-city trip on a fasting morning.
  • NABH-accredited facility, so the laboratory work and imaging behind your certificate run inside a recognised quality system rather than on habit.
  • The full panel on site, including audiometry, colour vision, digital X-ray, ECG, spirometry, in-house pathology and dental assessment.
  • Imaging depth if something turns up — ultrasound, CT and MRI in the same organisation, reported by a consultant radiologist.
  • Same-day certification in the ordinary course, so a seafarer travelling in is not held overnight unnecessarily.
  • Inclusions in writing before you travel, and an itemised receipt afterwards.
  • A team that sees seafarers regularly rather than occasionally — which shows in how few avoidable errors reach the certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is there a DG approved doctor in West Delhi?

Yes. Seafarer medical examinations are conducted at Edge Marine Medicals in Raghubir Nagar, Tagore Garden Extension, next to Rajouri Garden, by Dr. Nishant Thapar, MBBS, MD (Radiodiagnosis), under DG Shipping approval reference DEL/WES/0005/2026. On the official register dated 11 September 2026 this is the only entry with a West Delhi address.

2. Is there a DG approved doctor in Rajouri Garden or Tagore Garden?

Yes — the centre is in Raghubir Nagar, within Tagore Garden Extension and immediately adjacent to Rajouri Garden. Tagore Garden metro station on the Blue Line is the nearest station, with Subhash Nagar and Rajouri Garden next closest.

3. What is the nearest metro station?

Tagore Garden on the Blue Line. If you are on the Pink Line, change at Rajouri Garden, which is the Blue–Pink interchange. From the Green Line — Peeragarhi, Paschim Vihar, Madipur, Punjabi Bagh — change at Kirti Nagar or come down to Rajouri Garden.

4. How long does the seafarer medical take?

Because the whole panel is in one building, most seafarers finish within a few hours, with the certificate issued the same day in the ordinary course. Delays are usually caused by a finding that needs a repeat test or a specialist opinion, not by paperwork.

5. Can I do my DG Shipping medical in West Delhi and join a ship from another port?

Yes. The certificate is issued against the national standard by an approved examiner and is not tied to the port you sign on from. Seafarers examined here routinely join from Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Kandla and overseas.

6. I live in Gurugram, Bahadurgarh or Noida. Is West Delhi practical for me?

Usually more practical than South Delhi. From Bahadurgarh and Nangloi the Green Line runs straight in; from Gurugram the Dhaula Kuan route avoids central Delhi; from Noida and Ghaziabad the Blue Line runs directly to Tagore Garden. Tell us where you are starting from and we will suggest a slot that fits the journey.

7. How much does a DG Shipping medical cost in West Delhi?

It depends on the panel your rank and your shipping company require, which is why we confirm inclusions in writing rather than publishing one figure. Our cost guide explains what should appear in a complete quote; send us your rank and company on WhatsApp for your exact inclusions.

8. Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?

Book a slot. The examination involves fasting samples, imaging, audiometry and the examiner’s own assessment in sequence, and a booked slot is what lets us complete it in a single visit rather than across two.

9. Is a fresh medical the same as a renewal?

The panel is broadly the same, but bring your previous certificate. It tells the examiner what your baseline readings were, which genuinely helps when a value is borderline this time.

10. What happens if I am declared temporarily unfit?

Temporarily unfit is not the end of a career — it means a specific finding needs treatment or review before fitness can be certified. Ask the examiner exactly what the finding is, what would resolve it, and when you can be reassessed. Our guide on why seafarers are declared unfit covers the common causes.

11. Do you examine cadets and trainees as well as serving seafarers?

Yes. Pre-sea candidates, deck and engine cadets, serving officers and ratings are all examined under the same standard. Tell us the rank or the course you are applying for, because the required panel differs.

12. Can my employer or manning agent verify my certificate independently?

Yes, and that is the point of it. The examiner’s approval can be looked up in the Registered Medical Practitioners directory on the eSamudra portal, and the approval reference printed on your certificate should match what the directory shows.

13. Are the reports and certificate uploaded to the DG Shipping portal?

Yes. Once the examination is complete and the certificate is issued, the result is uploaded to the official portal, and you can check your own status against your INDoS profile.

14. What should I do if something in the portal does not match?

Ask the centre first — directory entries are refreshed periodically and a mismatch is often a timing issue or a spelling variant. If you cannot get a satisfactory answer in writing, raise it with DG Shipping through the contact channels on the official portal before you proceed.
