Pregnancy scans and the PCPNDT Act
Obstetric ultrasound in India is governed by the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994. As the Act requires, every pregnancy scan we perform is recorded on Form F, and a referring doctor’s prescription must be produced before the scan.
We do not determine or disclose the sex of a foetus. It is a criminal offence in India, and no request, from anyone, will be entertained. We say this plainly because it is the question expectant families most often worry about asking — and the answer will always be no.
How to prepare
Most scans that get repeated are repeated because of preparation, not because of the machine. Two minutes of reading here saves a second visit.
- Whole / Upper AbdomenFast for 6–8 hours — a morning slot is easiest. Water in small sips is fine. Take your regular medicines as usual.
- KUB · Pelvic Organs · Early PregnancyDrink about a litre of water an hour before and do not pass urine. A full bladder is what makes these scans readable.
- PVRU / Bladder VolumeCome with a full bladder. You will be asked to pass urine partway through — that is the test.
- Level-II (TIFFA) · Fetal Echo · Fetal Well-BeingNo fasting, no full bladder. Bring your prescription and all earlier pregnancy scans. Allow 30–45 minutes.
- Thyroid · Scrotum · Breast · Small partsNo preparation at all. Wear something that opens or lifts easily over the area.
- Colour Doppler studiesNo fasting for limb, carotid, thyroid or scrotal Doppler. For an abdominal or renal Doppler, fast for 6–8 hours.
- Guided FNAC, biopsy or drainageBring your prescription and any blood-thinner details. Come with someone accompanying you. Fasting instructions are given when you book.

Questions patients actually ask
What is the price of an ultrasound in West Delhi?
At Edge Imaging & Diagnostics a USG Whole Abdomen is ₹1,000, KUB and Pelvic Organs are ₹1,000 each, a Level-II (TIFFA) anomaly scan is ₹2,400 and Fetal Echo is ₹4,400. The full list is on this page. These are our list prices with no hidden charges and no inflated “discount”. Send us your prescription on WhatsApp and we will confirm today’s exact rate before you come in.
Do I need to fast before an ultrasound?
For an upper abdomen or whole abdomen scan, yes — come after 6 to 8 hours of fasting, usually first thing in the morning. Pregnancy scans, thyroid, scrotal, small parts and most Doppler studies need no fasting. If you are diabetic or on regular medicines, take them as usual and tell us at reception.
Do I need a full bladder?
For a KUB, pelvic organs or early pregnancy scan, yes — drink about a litre of water an hour before and do not pass urine. For a whole abdomen scan you need to be fasting and have a reasonably full bladder. For a PVRU study you will be asked to pass urine partway through, which is the point of the test.
Do I need a doctor’s prescription for an ultrasound?
For most scans a prescription is helpful but not mandatory — it tells the radiologist what to look for. Pregnancy scans are different: under the PCPNDT Act a referring doctor’s prescription and a completed Form F are required by law before any obstetric ultrasound.
Will you tell me the sex of my baby?
No. Under the PCPNDT Act, 1994 it is a criminal offence in India to determine or disclose the sex of a foetus, and we do not do it under any circumstances. Please do not ask our staff or radiologists. Every obstetric scan we perform is recorded on Form F as the law requires.
How long does an ultrasound take?
A routine abdomen, KUB or thyroid scan takes about 15 to 20 minutes. A Level-II anomaly scan or a Fetal Echo takes longer — usually 30 to 45 minutes — because every structure is examined individually. A follicular study is a few minutes per visit.
When will I get my report?
Routine ultrasound reports are issued the same day. For guided procedures and biopsies the imaging report is same-day and the histopathology follows separately.
Is ultrasound safe? Is it safe in pregnancy?
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation. There is no X-ray dose involved, which is why it is the imaging test of choice in pregnancy and for children. It is painless, and there is no recovery time.
Is an ultrasound painful?
No. You will feel cool gel on the skin and some pressure from the probe. A scan over a tender area, or a transvaginal or trans-rectal study, can be briefly uncomfortable, and the staff will tell you before anything begins.
Can an ultrasound detect cancer?
Ultrasound can find a suspicious lump, nodule or mass and describe its features, but it cannot by itself confirm cancer. Where a lesion looks suspicious the next step is usually a USG-guided FNAC or biopsy, which we perform here, and the tissue diagnosis comes from the laboratory.
Which conditions is ultrasound used for?
Gallstones and kidney stones, liver and pancreas disease, abdominal pain, urinary problems and prostate enlargement, thyroid nodules, breast and scrotal lumps, pregnancy from the first weeks to term, fertility follicle tracking, and blood-flow problems such as DVT, varicose veins and carotid narrowing.
Is a female radiologist available?
No — all of our radiologists are male. We would rather say so here than have you find out on arrival. If you would prefer a female member of staff to be present in the room during your scan, please tell us when you book and we will tell you what can be arranged at that centre.
Can my husband or a family member come in with me?
Please ask at reception when you arrive. Whether an attendant can come into the room depends on the scan, the room and how busy the department is that day. For obstetric scans, the PCPNDT rules and the privacy of other patients also apply.
Do you accept CGHS or insurance?
Edge Imaging & Diagnostics is CGHS and DGHS empanelled. Bring your CGHS card and referral. For private insurance and TPA cover, message us on WhatsApp with your policy details before booking and we will tell you exactly what is covered.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
You can walk in Monday to Saturday at any of our three centres. Booking a slot online or on WhatsApp means you are seen at a fixed time with little or no wait, which most patients prefer for the longer scans.
Are you open on Sunday?
Only the Moti Nagar and Paschim Vihar centres open on Sunday, and the hours are not fixed — they depend on the day’s patient load and radiologist availability. The Raghubir Nagar / Tagore Garden centre is closed on Sunday. Please message us on WhatsApp before travelling on a Sunday and we will confirm whether we can see you.
What should I bring?
Your doctor’s prescription, any previous scans or films of the same area, your ID, and your CGHS card if you have one. Wear something loose and easy to lift or move around the area being scanned.
