Lymph Node FNAC in Delhi: Fast Diagnosis of Swollen Nodes

A swollen lymph node in the neck, armpit or groin is one of the most common reasons people worry about a serious illness — but most enlarged nodes are due to infection, and many in India are caused by tuberculosis, not cancer. A lymph node FNAC in Delhi quickly finds the answer: a fine needle draws a few cells from the swollen node so a pathologist can tell whether it is a reactive node, tuberculosis, or something that needs further treatment. At Edge Imaging & Diagnostics in Paschim Vihar, West Delhi, lymph node FNAC is performed accurately under ultrasound guidance, often with same-day or next-day results.

This guide explains what a lymph node FNAC is, why it is especially useful in India, when it is needed, and how it differs from a lymph node biopsy.

What Is a Lymph Node FNAC?

Lymph node FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) is a quick, minimally invasive test in which a very thin needle — finer than one used for a blood test — is inserted into a swollen lymph node to draw out a small sample of cells. These cells are examined under a microscope to find the cause of the enlargement. It needs no cut, no stitches, and usually no anaesthesia, and you can go home within minutes.

Why Lymph Node FNAC Is So Valuable in India

In India, tuberculosis is a very common cause of enlarged lymph nodes (tubercular lymphadenitis), especially in the neck. Lymph node FNAC is an excellent, fast and affordable way to detect it — the aspirated material can show the typical features of TB and can be sent for a ZN stain and TB-PCR (such as CBNAAT/GeneXpert) to confirm the diagnosis and check for drug resistance. FNAC can also identify reactive/infective nodes and metastatic cancer cells. This makes it a powerful first-line test for almost any accessible swollen node.

When Is a Lymph Node FNAC Needed?

Your doctor may advise a lymph node FNAC if you have:

  • A lymph node that stays enlarged for more than 2–4 weeks
  • A node that is growing, hard, or fixed
  • Swollen nodes with fever, weight loss or night sweats (possible TB or lymphoma)
  • An enlarged node alongside a known or suspected cancer elsewhere
  • Neck, armpit or groin swelling that your doctor wants to investigate

Lymph Node FNAC vs Lymph Node Biopsy

Both check a swollen node, but they are different. A lymph node FNAC takes cells (cytology) — quick, simple, and often enough to diagnose TB, infection or metastatic cancer. A lymph node biopsy removes tissue (histology) and is usually needed when lymphoma is suspected or when FNAC is inconclusive, because subtyping lymphoma requires tissue architecture. Often FNAC is the sensible first step, and a biopsy follows only if needed. For the general procedure, see our guide to the FNAC test in Delhi.

Why Ultrasound Guidance Improves Accuracy

Nodes that are small, deep, or difficult to feel are best sampled under ultrasound guidance. Using live imaging, the radiologist places the needle exactly inside the abnormal part of the node, which improves sample adequacy and reduces the chance of an inconclusive result. It is part of our interventional radiology and ultrasound services.

How the Procedure Works

A lymph node FNAC is very quick:

  • Assessment: the node is examined and, if needed, located on ultrasound.
  • Cleaning: the skin over the node is cleaned with antiseptic.
  • Aspiration: a fine needle is passed into the node and a few cells are gently drawn out — this takes only seconds.
  • Sample prep: the cells are spread on slides and sent to the pathologist; part of the sample can be sent for TB tests if needed.
  • Go home: a small dressing is applied and you can resume normal activity immediately.

What the Report Can Show

A lymph node FNAC report commonly shows one of the following: a reactive/benign node (from infection or inflammation), tuberculosis (granulomas, positive TB tests), metastatic cancer (cancer cells spread from elsewhere), or an inadequate sample that needs repeating. Suspected lymphoma is usually confirmed with a tissue biopsy. Your doctor uses the result to decide the next step — reassurance, TB treatment, or further tests.

Is a Lymph Node FNAC Painful or Safe?

It is one of the least uncomfortable tests — a brief pinprick, similar to a blood test — and rarely needs anaesthesia. It is very safe; at most you may notice slight soreness or a small bruise that settles in a day or two. There are no stitches and no downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can lymph node FNAC detect TB?

Yes. It is one of the fastest ways to detect tubercular lymphadenitis — the sample can show typical TB features and be sent for ZN stain and TB-PCR (CBNAAT/GeneXpert) to confirm it and check for drug resistance.

Is a lymph node FNAC painful?

No. A very fine needle is used, so most people feel only a quick pinprick similar to a blood test. Anaesthesia is usually not required.

When will I get my report?

Cytology reports are often available the same day or the next day; TB tests on the sample may take a little longer.

Does an enlarged lymph node mean cancer?

Usually not. Most enlarged nodes are due to infection or TB. FNAC quickly identifies the few that need further attention, including cancer.

Is FNAC enough, or do I need a biopsy?

FNAC is often enough for TB, infection and metastatic cancer. If lymphoma is suspected or the result is unclear, a tissue biopsy is advised for a complete diagnosis.
