In women with dense breasts — common in younger women — a mammogram is often combined with a breast ultrasound (sonomammography) for the most complete picture, as the two tests find different things. If a mammogram shows a suspicious area, an ultrasound-guided breast FNAC or breast biopsy may be advised for a definite diagnosis.

How Mammography Is Performed
Each breast is placed on the mammography platform and gently compressed between two plates for a few seconds while the X-ray is taken — usually two views of each breast. The compression can feel uncomfortable but lasts only moments and is important for clear images and a lower radiation dose. The whole test takes about 15–20 minutes. On the day, avoid deodorant, powder or lotion on the breasts and underarms, as these can affect the images.
